The Book of Life

This animated film stars Diego Luna, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Ron Perlman, and Christina Applegate.   The story is about three friends: Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoe Saldana), and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) who grow up together and have to make big life changing decisions.  Both Manolo and Joaquin fall in love with Maria and want to win her heart.  Manolo travels through three different worlds and has to face his greatest fears.

Having seen the advertisements for this film a few months back and being able to catch it in the theater; I decided to review this film because I feel that this movie is so amazing that it deserves more attention.

The film is a beautiful work of art – the design, colors, characters, music, culture, the characterization of the actors. Even the end credits are visually appealing.

… I would love to decorate my walls with artwork and pieces from the film.

The small detailing and texture work in the characters and setting are done so well that make me want to reach out and touch it.  You can tell a lot of time and love were put into the making of this movie.

I like all of the sugar skulls and hearts designs on everything and I would love to decorate my walls with artwork and pieces from the film.

The characters are lovable and the voices are done by an all star cast.  I recognize almost everyone of the actors and they made great choices.  My favorite characters are La Muerte (Kate del Castillo) and Mary Beth (Christina Applegate).  Both of these characters are beautiful, strong, intelligent, and benevolent.  Another visually appealing character is the Candle Maker with the intricate tattoos on his arms.

This feel good film is for everyone and it has a great story.  I like the message of the movie to “write your own story”.  The story has a great ending that evokes feelings of happiness.  I also like the cute humor they use throughout the film.

The music is fun and a lot of the songs are covers of popular songs.  I also like the songs that were specifically written for the film.  My favorite songs are:  “I Will Wait”, “Creep”, “Just a Friend”, “I Love You Too Much”, and “No Matter Where You Are”.

Overall, everything about this film makes you feel good.  I love this movie!  I have nothing negative to say about it.  I recommend that everyone watch it at least once.  I have added this film to my personal collection and I have enjoyed the Bonus Features.  I may need to add the soundtrack to my personal collection as well.  I plan to purchase the artwork book of the film.  I hope to find other merchandise from the movie.
