Happy Christmas is listed as a comedy/drama and stars Anna Kendrick, Melanie Lynskey, Mark Webber, Joe Swanberg, and Lena Dunham. The story is about Jenny, played by Anna Kendrick, who goes to live with her brother Jeff and his family after breaking up with her boyfriend.
I initially chose this film because it looked like a Christmas film and had Anna Kendrick in it. I am a fan of Anna Kendrick and have enjoyed almost everything I have seen her in.
That being said, this movie was awful, boring, and did not feel like a Christmas movie at all…
I should have seen the signs… Before the movie began it showed the Magnolia logo which I have come to associate with horrible films that promote the use of bad camera work and hippie music and this film was no exception. The movie does not even have a resolution; it just ends.
It was supposed to be a Christmas film or so I thought but did not include any Christmas music. The camera work felt shaky at times and the filters they used made the actors look at least 10 years older. Maybe that is the effect they wanted but it definitely did nothing for the actors or the film. The overall feel was that of a documentary not story like at all and I kept thinking the whole thing was like a bad 70’s or 80’s commercial.
The characters were annoying, and this was especially true with the main character “Jenny”. I was not able to identify with her as a main character and she caused all kinds of drama, was selfish, irresponsible, and had very few redeeming qualities.
The character Jeff was giving his 2 year old son a bath while he was playing on his cell phone. That just seemed dangerous and self centered and only helped to make me angry.
Overall, I did not like this film and I do not recommend watching it. The only reason this film is receiving a rating above zero is because of Anna Kendrick and the adorable child in the film, Jude.
